What it measures

Physical

How well the aircraft is steered away from oncoming blocks, counted in collisions.

Cognitive

Accuracy on a rapid series of questions answered during the flight.

Situational awareness

Reporting aircraft and waypoints at the right time, following air traffic control and recalling what was seen.

Learning

How results change from the practice flight to the scored flight.

What the candidate does

  1. Briefing and sound check

Each of the four tasks is explained, and the candidate tests their audio before the first flight.

  2. Practice flight

Three minutes with all four tasks running at once. It is used to measure learning.

  3. Recall questions

After each flight, ten questions ask what the candidate saw and heard, with twelve seconds for each.

  4. Scored flight

Three minutes with all four tasks again. This flight sets the scores.

  5. Report

The PDF report gives the overall Sten, the three skill Stens and the learning result.

What the report shows

The report gives an overall Sten with its band, a Sten for each skill, collisions in each flight and the recall result.

Report page explaining each skill in plain language, shown with sample data

Both pages are from a sample report for an invented candidate.

Fairness and consistency

  • Version 2 uses four obstacle courses built to the same difficulty, so the draw does not decide the result.
  • The play area is the same size on every screen.
  • A school can choose the flight route for all of its candidates.
  • Every result is stamped with its test version and course, and the version 2 scale is provisional.

For schools and airlines

  • Assign the module to a cohort, set how many attempts each candidate gets and watch each one's status live.
  • Download each candidate's report as a PDF with your name and logo, or export the whole cohort as a CSV.
  • Reset the module for a candidate with a recorded reason when a technical fault interrupts them.
  • Fix the route so every candidate in a cohort flies the same one.

Questions

What are the four tasks?

Monitoring the cockpit and listening to air traffic control, answering a rapid series of questions, reporting aircraft and waypoints, and steering away from oncoming blocks.

How long does it take?

About 12 minutes in all: a briefing, then a three minute practice flight and a three minute scored flight, each followed by ten recall questions.

Do I need headphones?

The test uses audio, including radio calls. Headphones or speakers are needed, and the briefing includes a sound check.

Where does the flight take place?

Over real satellite imagery. There are three routes, Dubai, London and Sydney, and a school can choose one for all of its candidates.

Does AviMetric decide who passes?

No. AviMetric reports a Sten score and a band. Your selection team makes every decision.
